Only the flowers are gathered, at full bloom, the seeds having other uses; they are dried in the shade so that the colour does not fade. Dry, they form fine, supple filaments of a deep orange-red, almost without smell, of a light and slightly herbaceous taste. A pinch is enough to tint hot water, a syrup or a rice dish vividly.
