They come as half-fruits or quarters, hard and compact, of a blackish green, with a thick peel and dry flesh; the scent is very bitter and pungent. The whole difference from Zhi Ke lies in the age of the fruit: picked far younger, Zhi Shi is smaller, harder, richer in essential oils, and distinctly more bitter in the mouth.
